Merle Collins es poetiza, y también profesora de literatura. Collins se involucró profundamente en la Revolución de Grenada (1979) y también sirvió como coordinadora en el gobierno para las investigaciones sobre América Latina y el Caribe. Merle Collins dejó Grenada en 1983.  Desde 1995 ha sido Profesora Titular de Literatura Inglesa y Literatura Comparada en la Universidad de Maryland, en donde enseña escritura creativa y literatura caribeña. Su primer poemario Because the Dawn Breaks fue publicado en 1985, al mismo tiempo que participara como miembro del  grupo de teatro-performance “African Dawn”, que combinaba poesía de su propia creación y música africana. Para 1987 publicaba su primera novela Angel, la cual sigue la vida de la sociedad grenadina y su lucha por la independencia. Su colección de cuentos cortos Rain Darling fue escrita en 1990, y su segundo poemario, Rotten Pomerack en 1992.  Su segunda novela The Color of Forgetting fue publicada en 1995. En 2003 publicó su poemario Lady in a Boat. Su más reciente colección de cuentos, The Ladies Are Upstairs  fue publicada en el 2011.

Merle Collins is a Grenadian poet and novelist, as well as a professor of literature. Collins was deeply involved in the Grenadian Revolution and served as a government coordinator for research on Latin America and the Caribbean.  She left Grenada in 1983.  Since 1995, she has been Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Maryland, where she teaches Creative Writing and Caribbean Literature.  Her first collection of poetry, Because the Dawn Breaks, was published in 1985, at which time she was a member of African Dawn, a performance group combining poetry, mime and African music.  In 1987, she published her first novel Angel, which follows the lives of Grenadians as they struggled for independence.  Her collection of short stories, Rain Darling, was produced in 1990, and a second collection of poetry, Rotten Pomerack, in 1992.  Her second novel, The Colour of Forgetting, was published in 1995.  She published a poetry collection, Lady in a Boat, in 2003.  Her most recent collection of stories, The Ladies Are Upstairs, was published in 2011.
